Patagonia Provisions x Dogfish Head

Picture this: You’re sitting by the fire, admiring the sunset while eating savory sofrito mussels, courtesy of Patagonia Provisions. You feel good about yourself because you know that your food was sourced and packaged sustainably, so you’re making a better choice for the environment. What more could you ask for?

A beer, right? So you reach inside your cooler for your trusted Budweiser. Except you start to feel guilty because you realize how bad brewing industry is for the environment. What a dilemma! Do you want to quench your thirst or contribute to the climate crisis?

Enter: Kernza Pils, a beer that’s good for the planet.

The outcome of Patagonia Provisions X Dogfish Head has us believing that partnerships can save the world. Their co-created beer is made from Kernza, a regenerative grain that pulls carbon directly from the atmosphere and confines it to the ground.

Patagonia has always prioritized eco-friendly operations. Their food brand Patagonia Provisions is no different, offering a variety of camping-ready treats that are sourced from local farmers and packaged with recyclable materials.

Before partnering with Dogfish Head, Patagonia Provisions had already released the first beer made with Kernza: a simple pale ale. However, the beer was only available in select locations. The brand needed help scaling their brewing procedures in order to make the beer available across the states.

That’s where partnerships come in handy. Staying true to their values, Patagonia Provisions selected Dogfish Head to join their mission. In the last 25 years, Dogfish Head has remained committed to brewing with regenerative grains as they’ve grown into one of the largest breweries in the US. They’ve also partnered with many organizations that address climate change and other environmental issues.

Together, the brands created Kernza Pils and brought it to market for the first time this spring. By creating a bigger market pull for Kernza, the brands incentivizes farmers to grow more of it. This means drawing more carbon from the atmosphere and building a healthier planet, one beer at a time.

In addition to being environmentally-friendly, it also tastes good. Kernza creates an earthy, aromatic bear that customers find crisp, refreshing, and clean. In just three months, Kernza Pils has become the most popular Kernza-based beer on the West Coast.

Collaborations like Patagonia Provisions X Dogfish Head show customers what your brand values better than you can tell them. Rather than bragging about their commitment to sustainability, the brands conveyed it through their actions, and buying Kernza Pils over Budweiser allows customers to do the same.
